Dell EMC PowerEdge R740xd Server – Upgrading and “terrible” storage

Enterprise architecture is expanding, Dell is also constantly upgrading its server product lines. And most typical is the 14th generation Dell EMC PowerEdge server – R740xd, let’s explore in this article.

The Dell EMC PowerEdge R740xd server represents a great platform for performance and storage in a 2U size. Servers can be configured with up to 2 Intel Scalable CPUs and 24 DDR4 DIMMs (supporting 12 NVDIMMs), but where they really shine is in how they approach storage. While the R740 offers 16 hard drive bays, the R740xd offers up to 32 2.5 bays, 24 of which can be NVMe. The R740xd also offers some unique storage layouts compared to conventional hard drive bays, including middle and rear bays to accommodate all additional storage in the same 2U size. The layout allows users to tailor their storage needs to their application by being able to combine NVMe, SSD, and HDD in the same chassis, creating storage tiers within the chassis.

The Dell EMC PowerEdge R740xd also supports up to 192GB NVDIMMs. Furthermore, the R740xd is able to boot from an M.2 SSD RAID drive via an add-on card, freeing up more accessible space for workload storage. Both versions are good for SDS, carrier, and VDI, with total storage and NVMe being the key differentiators. Another new addition to the R740xd is the support for GPU-accelerated cards.  Both are capable of supporting up to 3 300W cards or 6 150W cards. In this generation, Dell EMC designed the BIOS to automatically register the airflow required by each card and provide individually tuned airflow through a feature called omnidirectional cooling.

Design and Build Dell EMC PowerEdge R740xd

The Dell EMC PowerEdge R740xd server has been redesigned not only to look sleek, but to reflect how users and applications interact with them. The front panel is a new bezel with Quick Sync support with wireless connectivity with OpenManage for Mobile software . The same design on the new servers is incorporated into the new Dell EMC hosting offerings, including systems like the Unity 450F all-flash array. Below the bezel, there are 24 bays of 2.5” supporting SATA, SAS, Nearline SAS and NVMe

Glancing behind the R740xd, customers looking for maximum expansion potential should take note. Starting in the upper-left corner, there are three full-height PCIe expansion slots, and below them are the system identification button, a dedicated iDRAC network port, a serial port, a VGA port, and two USB 3.0 ports. In between are two more full-height PCIe slots, in addition to the half-height slot used for the RAID card on this build. Below those is an rNDC slot housed with a dual-port Mellanox 25Gb port. In the upper right are two full-height PCIe slots above the dual source. With two full-height PCIe slots for redundancy, Dell EMC gets support for four 2.5″ NVMe SSDs, dual RAID cards, dual SSDs, as well as a dual-port 25Gb Ethernet card

Conclude

The Dell EMC PowerEdge R740xd is the “extreme disk” version of the R740. In the 2U size, it can hold up to 32 2.5 drives including up to 24 NVMe drives. This server can help unleash the potential of all that high-performance storage by taking full advantage of two Intel Scalable processors and up to 3TB of memory.

With all the extra flexibility that the xd flavor of the R740 offers, it’s no surprise that Dell EMC is using it as a lynchpin in some of their SDS offerings, including vSAN Ready Nodes, ScaleIO Ready Nodes, Storage Spaces Direct Ready Nodes, VxRail and the XC740xd (Nutanix). All in all, the PowerEdge R740xd is the most complete server to date in terms of build quality as well as system design.

Currently, the Dell EMC PowerEdge R740XD server product is available in Vietnam and is officially distributed by  ADG . With more than 15 years of experience in the IT industry, ADG always combines with the most advanced technology products and applications from Dell Technologies to ensure to bring customers quality products at the most affordable prices. on the market.
